Difference Between Hard Drive vs RAM
Data is stored on hard drives and RAM. It can be either long-lasting or short-lived (temporary). Storage systems use magnetic or optical media, while RAM uses semiconductor chips. RAM allows data to be accessed at a faster rate than storage media. We'll take a closer look at the distinctions between a hard drive and RAM in this article.
Hard Drive: When it comes to space or storage (memory space), the hard disc still outnumbers RAM. RAM is available in sizes ranging from 256MB to 32GB. The scale of the available hard drive ranges from 500GB to 8TB.
RAM: Random access memory (RAM) is an acronym for random access memory. Just by looking at the name can we deduce that it can enter any memory location. Since it is a volatile memory, all data will be destroyed if the power supply is interrupted, it requires a steady power supply to keep the data in its memory cell content. We are unable to keep sensitive information on file indefinitely. It reads and writes data and will keep saving the memory until a constant power supply is available.
On a typical host, there are two forms of memory.
- RAM (Random Access Memory): RAM allows users to access every memory location and read and write data directly. Since RAM is ephemeral, it takes a continuous supply of power to keep the primary memory data alive. If the power supply is broken or not continuous, data is deleted from the main memory.
- Read-Only Memory (ROM): Read-Only Memory (ROM) is a form of non-volatile memory that enables data to be read from it. The cost of a hard disc is smaller than the cost of RAM memory.
