The 5G wireless devices in a cell connect with a local antenna array and low-power automated transceiver (transmitter and receiver) in the cell through radio waves, using frequency channels assigned by the transceiver from a pool of frequencies that are reused in other cells. Local antennas are coupled to transmission electronics, which are connected to telephone network switching centres and routers through high-bandwidth optical fiber or wireless backhaul links for Internet access. A mobile device travelling from one cell to another is automatically handed over, much like in other cell networks.
